Carson: Bush Should Have Caught Bin Laden

Ben Carson has joined Donald Trump in slamming George W. Bush, suggesting the former president should have captured Osama bin Laden following the 9/11 attacks, CNN reported.

The retired neurosurgeon said Sunday on ABC’s “This Week” that Bush could have threatened to stop buying Middle East oil if countries in the region did not aid in the search for the al Qaeda leader.

“I think they would have been extremely concerned if we had declared, and we were serious about it, that we were going to become petroleum independent, because it would have had a major impact on their finances,” Carson told show host George Stephanopoulos. “And I think that probably would have trumped any loyalty that they had to people like Osama bin Laden.”

CNN noted that it was not the first time the candidate has espoused the theory. He said previously that by pressuring moderate Arab officials, Bush could have found bin Laden without using military force.

“I think they would have known where he was,” Carson said on “This Week,” adding: “You know, there were indications, for instance, during the Clinton administration that they knew exactly where he was but didn’t necessarily pull the trigger. If we could tell where he was, I’m certain that they knew where he was.”

Carson also criticized the U.S. occupation of Iraq. “We had other ways that we could have done things,” he said. “I personally don’t believe that invading Iraq was an existential threat to us.”
