Carson Accepts Cruz Apology For ‘Absolute Lies’

Ben Carson has accepted an apology from the Ted Cruz campaign for a misleading message one of the Texas senator’s supporters issued on Twitter just before the Iowa caucuses.

Newsmax reported that U.S. Rep. Steve King of Iowa, who has endorsed Cruz’s presidential bid, tweeted: “Carson looks like he is out. Iowans need to know before the vote. Most will go for Cruz. I hope.”

The congressman was responding to media reports that the retired pediatric neurosurgeon was taking a break from the campaign to spend time at his home in Florida. A Carson spokesman told reporters the candidate needed to pick up clean clothes after weeks of stumping in Iowa.

The Carson campaign accused King of deliberately discouraging their supporters from taking part in the caucuses. Cruz’s staffers called the tweet a “mistake” based on a misunderstanding of a CNN story.

On CNN’s “The Lead With Jake Tapper,” Carson said: “Well, you know, as a Christian, I will accept an apology. But it doesn’t correct the problem. You know, this is a cultural issue when people in your campaign feel that it’s OK to distort the issues to their political advantage and to tell absolute lies. If we don’t assign responsibility and consequences, what keeps this from continuing to happen? … I think whoever is responsible for blatant lying should be dismissed, absolutely, unless that kind of behavior is acceptable in your campaign culture.”
