Carson: ‘I Am Not Making Inflammatory Comments’

Though he faces mounting criticism, Ben Carson is not backing down from his controversial statements on the campaign trail.

The retired neurosurgeon, who is nipping at Donald Trump’s heels in the race for the Republican presidential nomination, defended his rhetoric Monday in an interview with The Hill. He doubled down on his claim that the Holocaust happened because Germans were unarmed, his declaration that no Muslim should become president of the United States, and his suggestion that mass-shooting victims fight back against their attackers.

“I want people to see me as an honest person, a person who is actually willing to express what they believe,” Carson said. “The way I look at it, if people don’t like that, I’d rather not be in office. I don’t want to be in office under false pretenses, just saying things people want to hear so I can get elected.”

He added: “I am not making inflammatory comments, although the media will try and turn it into inflammatory comments, but nothing that I’ve said is an inflammatory comment and that’s not the way that people see it.”

Despite howls of protests from Democrats, and predictions by the news media that his remarks will eventually doom his campaign, Carson continues to climb in the polls. According to one survey, he has pulled into a virtual tie with Trump.
