Bush Twins Spill The Beans On Growing Up In The White House

It’s not easy growing up in the public eye, and that’s especially true when your father is the most powerful man in the world. Barbara and Jenna Bush are among those that have lived to tell the tale of what that was like.

The twin daughters of the 43rd President of the United States, George W. Bush, have collaborated on a new book entitled ‘Sisters First,’ and it’s chock full of all kinds of fascinating tidbits.

As the Daily Mail shares, front and center is a rather embarrassing incident that Jenna Bush Hager experienced when she was just six-years-old.

Her grandfather, George H.W. Bush, was president at the time, and he was entertaining the Chinese president at the White House. Behind the scenes, Jenna’s older cousin had convinced her that maxi pads were used to soak up underarm sweat.

Guess who came stumbling in with something rather unsightly underneath her arms.

“I was like, hey, everyone,” Jenna recalled during an interview with the ‘Today’ show.

Thankfully, that moment wasn’t preserved for posterity, as the photojournalists in attendance decided to put the cameras down to save her further embarrassment.

“They were sweet. They never published those pictures,” Barbara added.

One of the pair’s more high-profile missteps happened while their father was in office. In May 2001, the 19-year-old twins were popped for attempting to order drinks while underage.

The embarrassing incident attracted plenty of headlines, but it doesn’t look all that bad with the benefit of hindsight.

“We weren't that smart,” Jenna notes.

She also recalls something from the incident that still sticks with her, and that came in the form of words of wisdom from her dad.

“I called my dad and I said I'm sorry that I embarrassed you. And he said, 'No, I'm sorry. I told you to be normal,'" she said.

The ladies also recall how concerned their father was with how his decision to go to war with Iraq would affect his daughters, who were both away at college at the time.

“I think that he knew, of course, this may not be a popular decision on any college campus. And the fact that he even considered the implications for us is so who our dad is.

Just very aware of others and loving for others,” Barbara said.

It turns out her father was right to be a little worried, as Barbara recalls an awkward encounter she had in which a teacher promised an ‘A’ if her dad didn’t go to war.

“I saw my teacher as an authority figure and I thought she would have seen me as just a student. And so it was uncomfortable for sure."

"But something that definitely kind of taught me how you use your position, if you're in a position of power,” she added.

Despite the perils of growing up in the spotlight, things have worked out just fine for the Bush twins. They seem to be happy and well-adjusted young ladies, and their bond seems just as strong as it was during their younger days when their dad was the man in the Oval Office.
