Bush Backs Obama on Accepting Refugees

Jeb Bush, unlike many of his fellow Republicans, tentatively supports President Obama’s plan to allow 10,000 Syrian refugees to resettle in the United States, The Hill reported.

“I think people are legitimately concerned about the efficiency, the competency, of the Obama administration as it relates to screening processes,” the presidential candidate told Bloomberg Politics. “But we have systems in place. If there is any kind of concern, we shouldn’t allow people in. But I don’t think we should eliminate support for refugees. It’s been a noble tradition in our country for many years.”

Since the terrorist attacks in Paris, more than 30 governors have announced they will refuse to let refugees into their states. The administration maintains that they lack the authority to do carry out the pledge. According to The Hill, two of Bush’s rivals for the GOP nomination (Sens. Ted Cruz and Rand Paul) have vowed to sponsor legislation stopping Obama from following through with his plan.

Cruz’s idea of accepting only Christian refugees met with a rebuke from Bush. “I don’t agree,” the former Florida governor said. “The answer to this … is not to ban people from coming. The answer is to lead to resolve the problem in Syria. That’s the ultimate answer and that’s my focus.”
