Boehner Urges GOP to Nominate Paul Ryan For President

If Donald Trump or another GOP candidate does not secure the party’s presidential nomination, Republicans should recruit Rep. Paul Ryan, according to the Wisconsin lawmaker’s predecessor as speaker of the house.

Breitbart News reported that John Boehner, the former Ohio congressman who resigned as speaker last year, called on delegates to July’s Republican convention to vote for Ryan if no one wins on the first ballot. According to Politico, Boehner declared during a speech in Florida: “If we don’t have a nominee who can win on the first ballot, I’m for ‘none of the above.’ They all had a chance to win. None of them won. So, I’m for ‘none of the above.’ I’m for Paul Ryan to be our nominee.”

Ryan, who was Mitt Romney’s vice-presidential running mate in the 2012 election, has left open the possibility that he would accept this year’s presidential nomination, CNBC reported. He gave up his chairmanship of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee to succeed Boehner as speaker.

Trump won four of the five states that held Republican primaries on Tuesday, with Ohio Gov. John Kasich placing first in his home state. Because the elections were winner-take-all contests, Trump significantly increased his lead in convention delegates. He is well on his way to earning enough delegates to capture the nomination on the first ballot.
