Blackburn Says GOP Needs ‘a Woman on the Ticket’

The Republican Party should nominate a woman for president or vice president next year, according to GOP Rep. Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee.

"I hope that you're going to see a woman on the Republican ticket this year," she said Sunday on CNN’s “State Of The Union.”

The Hill noted that the congresswoman participated in a discussion concerning how Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul and other GOP candidates can compete with Hillary Clinton, the frontrunner for the Democratic presidential nomination.

"Everybody's going to have to have women to win," Blackburn said during the news show, which took place shortly before Clinton formally announced her White House bid later in the day.

Blackburn urged "that field of guys out there right now running” to "just be cognizant, aware and to make certain they don't misstep when it comes to dealing with women constituents, with female reporters.”

With Florida Sen. Marco Rubio’s announcement this week, the Republican field of presidential candidates will grow to three. Paul and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz already have thrown their hats into the ring. Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, who leads polls of likely GOP primary voters, is expected to officially enter the race soon.

Blackburn told Fox News she is “not running for president.”
