Billionaire Trump Says Low-Wage Workers Make Too Much Money

Donald Trump surprised some of his working-class supporters when he declared during Tuesday night’s Republican presidential debate that wages are “too high.”

He made the remark while answering a question about raising the minimum wage to $15 per hour, which many fast-food employees and other low-paid workers are demanding. The billionaire promised that as president he would fight any attempt to increase poor people’s pay.

“We have to become competitive with the world. Our taxes are too high, our wages are too high, everything is too high,” Trump said Wednesday on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” according to The Hill. “What’s going to happen is now people are going to start firing people.”

The Nation reported that historically, the number of jobs has not declined following increases in the minimum wage, as Trump and fellow GOP candidate Ben Carson claim.

Trump maintained in the debate that raising wages would make it harder for the United States to compete with countries where workers are paid less. “I hate to say it, but we have to leave it the way it is,” he said. “People have to go out, they have to work really hard and have to get into that upper stratum. But we cannot (increase the minimum wage) if we are going to compete with the rest of the world; we just can’t do it.”

The Pew Research Center pointed out that even though wages have gone up during the past 50 years, workers’ purchasing power has stayed about the same because of inflation.
