Biden On Hillary: "I Never Thought She Was A Great Candidate”

There has been a ton of chatter about ‘what might have been’ when it comes to the 2016 presidential election. The conversation can take on many different forms, ranging from ‘what if Hillary did that,’ to ‘what if this hadn’t happened,’ and all points in between, and it generally goes round in circles until someone throws their hands up. One big talking point has always been about what would have happened if former Vice President Joe Biden had thrown his hat into the ring, and it sounds like he’s still wondering about that himself.

As AOL shares, Biden offered up some pretty surprising thoughts while making an appearance at the SALT conference in Las Vegas, and those comments will only further fuel speculation about his plans for 2020.

"I never thought she was a great candidate. I thought I was a great candidate," he said.

Perhaps realizing that he had opened up a can of worms with those comments, he would later expand on those thoughts.

"Hillary would have been a good president," Biden added.

We’ll never know about that, and we’ll also never know how Biden would have fared against Trump. Biden is incredibly popular, but part of that stems from the fact that he was the loveable sidekick of former President Obama. It’s a pretty big leap from sidekick to leading man, and many before him have been unable to pull off that trick.

That being said, Biden is a gifted speaker that has a knack for connecting with those on both sides of the aisle, so perhaps he would’ve been able to run a more positive campaign that didn’t turn into a constant war of words. That was part of what did Hillary in, as Trump’s words were viewed as straight talk, while hers were viewed as condescending and out of touch. Whether that’s fair or not is irrelevant, as perception is what moves the needle regarding voter interest.

Speaking of perception, Biden offered up some other interesting takes. He noted that the Obama administration sailed through eight years "without a single scandal ... not one."

We’ll assume Biden was caught up in the moment and looking back on those eight years with a great deal of selective memory. As for the future, Biden just won’t stamp out those flames of speculation.

"Could I? Yes. Would I? Probably not," he said.
