Biden: End ‘Dysfunction’ In Congress; Address ‘Urgent Business’

Joe Biden on Thursday blasted congressional Republicans for failing to tackle some of the major issues facing the country.

According to The Hill, the vice president called on GOP leaders to end their “dysfunction.” He urged them to hold hearings for Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland, take action to protect Americans from the Zika virus, and pass gun-control legislation.

Biden, speaking on the steps of the U.S. Capitol with House and Senate Democrats at his side, declared: “Some of the things we’re dealing with now are bigger than partisan politics. We’re facing a simple reality. We’re not doing the people’s most urgent business.”

He called the Zika virus “a genuine health threat,” adding: “It’s here. It’s consequential. Deal with it. Give us an up-or-down vote straight on Zika. Look, I’ve been here a long time in the Senate. I understand tacking controversial issues to important legislation, but not for national emergencies.”

Biden slammed the Senate Judiciary Committee, which he once chaired, for setting “an incredibly dangerous precedent in the institution that I love” by refusing to consider Garland’s appointment. “It is the Senate’s responsibility to act, up or down,” he said. “There are real consequences for continuing to leave this post vacant.”

The vice president argued that no one on the government’s “no-fly” or terrorism-watch lists should be allowed to purchase firearms. “There is an overwhelming consensus in America: If you can’t fly, you shouldn’t be able to buy,” he said.
