Bible or Constitution? It Depends, Carson Says

When Ben Carson was asked Sunday whether he would follow the Constitution or the Bible as president, he said it depends on the circumstances.

On NBC’s “Meet the Press,” host Chuck Todd cited a question posed on Facebook by Victor Roush: “Does the Bible have authority over the Constitution?” Todd called it a “simple question,” but Carson disagreed.

“I think probably what you have to do is ask a very specific question about a specific passage of the Bible and a specific portion of the Constitution,” he said. “I don’t think you can answer that question other than out of very specific contexts.”

On another topic, Carson argued that the debate about the “Black Lives Matter” movement is “political correctness going amuck.”

“If you hire a plumber and he does a bad job, do you say all plumbers are bad? Let's go out and kill them? I don't think we do that,” the candidate explained. “We need to be a little more mature, but certainly in cases where police are doing things that are inappropriate, I think we ought to investigate those promptly and justice should be swift.”

Carson, the only black contender for the White House, added: “Of course all lives matter, and of course we should be very concerned about what's going on, particularly in our inner cities.”
