Ben Carson Rips ‘Bluster and Rhetoric’ of Bernie Sanders

Republican presidential contender Ben Carson set his sights on Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders last week, accusing the Vermont senator of making unrealistic proposals.

The Hill reported that during a CNN-sponsored town-hall event in Greenville, S.C., Carson told a crowd of undecided GOP voters: “I think the American people are smart enough to be able to understand bluster and rhetoric versus truth. And when it comes to the general election, people who are running around saying things like ‘free college for everyone,’ it will be very easy to counter that by simply educating people as to the actual financial condition of our nation.”

Sanders wants to extend the country’s guarantee of a free high school education to public colleges and universities. He has called for a tax on Wall Street speculation to finance the plan, arguing that big banks owe something to taxpayers who bailed them out after the financial collapse of 2008. The senator points out that other Western, industrialized nations already have tuition-free colleges.

Carson, referring to the former conservative prime minister of England, told his audience: “I think Margaret Thatcher probably said it best. She said, ‘Socialism is great until you run out of other people’s money.’ And that is exactly what would happen. And we would explain that to people and I think they would understand.”

Sanders is a self-described democratic socialist who has always caucused with Democrats in the House and Senate.
