Ben Carson: Don’t ‘Inject Race into Everything’

The role that race plays in society is often exaggerated, Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson suggested during an interview on CBS’ “Face the Nation.”

He said Americans “have a tendency to inject race into everything anytime that there are people of different races involved in a conflict.” The retired pediatric brain surgeon added: “Are there rotten police officers? Of course there are; just like there are rotten doctors and rotten teachers and rotten journalists. But we don’t condemn the whole class for that.”

According to The Hill, Carson was responding to a question about Sandra Bland, an African-American who hanged to death in a Texas jail cell last July after she was arrested for an alleged traffic violation. A video showed state police officer Brian Encinia screaming at the woman and threatening to drag her out of her car, after he stopped her for failing to use a turn signal.

Protesters who gathered in Waller County alleged that the incident was another case of a white cop using excessive force against a black suspect. However, Bland’s death was ruled a suicide, and a grand jury declined to file charges against Encinia.

The Hill reported that Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders weighed in on the case, declaring that the officer would have acted differently if Bland had been white.

Carson is the only African-American among the Republican and Democratic White House hopefuls.
