Being Married To Mike Pence Means One Thing: Strict Rules

Vice President Mike Pence proposed to his wife Karen while the couple had been feeding ducks together. He hollowed out two loaves of bread. In one, he hid a ring box. In the other, he hid a champagne bottle. As Karen tore pieces of bread off her loaf to feed the birds, she found the ring box. She had something for him, too, that she'd been carrying around in anticipation of him proposing: a gold cross with the word 'yes' on it.

The couple were married in 1985 and have been going strong ever since, which is no small feat in this day and age. "You can't get a dime between them," says Trump policy advisor and Family Research Council senior fellow Ken Blackwell.

How do they do it? It seems the secret to the Pence's long and happy marriage is that they are an old-fashioned couple who share a strong faith, and, according to the Washington Post, they follow rules they've established.

One rule revealed by Pence in a 2002 interview with the Post is that he doesn't attend events featuring alcohol without his wife by his side. Another rule is that the VP won't dine alone with any woman other than his wife.

Karen said after a luncheon with military service women that she has a 'hard and fast rule' to not talk about policy with her husband. She stands back and provides a 'listening ear' instead.

The second lady is described as her husband's 'gut check', his 'shield' and his 'prayer warrior' all rolled into one.

The couple caused quite a stir after Rolling Stones magazine reported that Mr. Pence called his wife ‘mother’ several times during a dinner party. The endearment fell out of fashion more than 50 years ago, and many who don’t even remember when it was common for married couples to call each other ‘mother’ or ‘father’ found it strange and creepy.

People can scoff, but the Pence’s marriage has stood the test of time, so they must be doing something right.
