Arizona Republic Bucks Tradition With Endorsement Of Clinton

Endorsements are pretty valuable currency during presidential election cycles, and it doesn’t take too much imagination to imagine the backroom negotiations that go into garnering some of them. Some of the more sought after ones in most states revolve around the most-respected newspaper within its borders, and it’s not uncommon to see them support the same party over and over again.

As the Washington Post points out, one venerable publication in the state of Arizona is switching sides. The Arizona Republic has announced its endorsement of Hillary Clinton, marking the first time the publication has endorsed a non-Republican candidate in its history.

“Since The Arizona Republic began publication in 1890, we have never endorsed a Democrat over a Republican for president. Never. This reflects a deep philosophical appreciation for conservative ideals and Republican principles,” an editorial published by the paper said.

The lengthy post would go on to outline the reasoning of the paper’s editorial board for giving Clinton the nod.

“She does not casually say things that embolden our adversaries and frighten our allies. Her approach to governance is mature, confident and rational. That cannot be said of her opponent,” the editorial continued.
