Ann Coulter: Trump Is Abandoning His MAGA Promise

Ann Coulter lashed out at President Trump on Wednesday, accusing him of veering too far off track. She's taken issue with Trump focusing on tax reform rather than some of his other campaign promises, the Daily Mail reported.

“WTF! Why is @realDonald Trump back to tax cuts?” the conservative author and commentator tweeted. “His election was NOT about tax cuts. … Tax cuts are a second term issue. 1st term: BUILD THE WALL, End DACA, Deport Illegals, No Refugees, No Muslims, Immigration Moratorium. SAVE USA! … It’s like ‘Night of the Living Dead’ watching our beloved @realDonaldTrump go to DC & start babbling the same old GOP nonsense on tax cuts.”

Coulter was responding to the president’s appearance earlier Wednesday in Springfield, Mo., where he urged Congress to reduce taxes for individuals and corporations. The commentator argued that the goal should be making the tax system less complicated and easing the burden on businesses. She suggested that Trump is trying to help the rich while ignoring the millions of working-class Americans who voted for him. “Oh, stop pretending this is about letting ‘families’ keep more of their money,” she tweeted. “HALF OF AMERICANS DON’T PAY TAXES! This is for Wall Street.”

Coulter, an enthusiastic Trump supporter during the 2016 race who praised the candidate in her book “In Trump We Trust,” has since soured on the administration. In a recent interview with the Daily Beast, following the firing of former chief White House strategist Stephen Bannon, Coulter called the president the “emperor god.” She told the news site: “The millions of people who haven’t voted for 30 years and came out to vote for Trump, thinking, ‘Finally, here’s somebody who cares about us’ — Nope!”

The president urged Missourians to ask one of their senators, Democrat Claire McCaskill, to support his tax proposals. “This is our once-in-a-generation opportunity to deliver real tax reform for everyday hardworking Americans,” he said. “And I don’t want to be disappointed by Congress, do you understand me?” Regarding McCaskill, he declared: “She must do this for you. And if she doesn’t do it for you, you have to have to vote her out of office.”

USA Today reported that the administration has not provided any details about the plan other than a one-page fact sheet. Lawmakers, who have been busy debating health care and other issues, also have not drafted tax legislation. Trump called for making taxes “simple, fair and easy to understand.” He argued that a single-page form would allow most people to prepare their own returns, without having to hire someone.

The president advocated a huge cut in the top corporate tax rate, from 35 percent to 15 percent; and an unspecified reduction in tax bills for middle-income people. He said there ought to be three tax brackets instead of seven, and that the maximum individual rate should be 35 percent rather than the current 39.6 percent.

The top-ranking Democrat in Congress, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York, described the proposals as a “boon for the rich.” He challenged Trump to come up with “a plan that puts the middle class, not the top 1 percent, first.”
