Ann Coulter Questions Ted Cruz’s Citizenship

Donald Trump is not alone in suggesting that his top rival for the Republican presidential nomination, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, may not be eligible for the nation’s highest office because he was born in Canada.

The Hill reported that Trump supporter Ann Coulter, a conservative political pundit and author, made the argument Wednesday on Twitter. “New York Times: Cruz was born outside the U.S. to 1 American parent. ‘Under the Constitution, this makes him a natural born citizen.’ Absolutely false,” she wrote.

On Tuesday, Trump told The Washington Post that “Republicans are going to have to ask themselves the question: ‘Do we want a candidate who could be tied up in court for two years?’” He said, “that’d be a big problem.”

The Hill explained that Cruz’s mother was born in the United States, while his father came from Cuba. Cruz held dual citizenship for most of his life, dropping his ties to Canada after being elected to the U.S. Senate. Legal scholars have long argued that, under the Constitution, anyone born to a U.S. citizen is also a citizen, even if the birth takes place in another country.

Cruz responded to his critics by posting on Twitter a link from the TV program “Happy Days,” in which Fonzie jumps over a shark while riding a motorcycle.
