Ann Coulter In Hot Water After She Blames This Person For Hurricane Harvey

While this point doesn’t need to be made for most rational folks, there are others that just don’t seem to comprehend it: There’s a time and a place to make political points. During a time of a natural disaster or a national crisis is not one of them. Many have taken that cue and been on their best behavior. Others have not. The end result? Those that choose to take the latter route risk doing permanent damage to their own credibility.

As the Huffington Post shares, that could very well be the case here. Conservative commentator Ann Coulter is not a big fan of the fact that an outlet used Harvey as an opportunity to advance a narrative. She’s right on the money about that - see above reference to a time and a place. However, she took things to a whole other level to get her point across, and she comes out looking like the bad guy as a result.

As the Huffington Post shares, Coulter offered up some comments in response to a post from Politico, which decided it would be perfectly appropriate to run a piece that blamed Harvey on climate change. Coulter was ticked off by this, but she didn’t need to take it where she did.

“I don't believe Hurricane Harvey is God's punishment for Houston electing a lesbian mayor. But that is more credible than 'climate change,'" Coulter wrote.

As most fully functioning adults know, two wrongs don’t make a right. The publication deserved to be called out for advancing a narrative while others are in peril. But did it really need to be done in such an outlandish fashion? That comes with the territory with Coulter, but she did herself no favors here. Her outrageous comments get all the play, and the point she was trying to make gets lost in the shuffle.

Words are powerful. Coulter knows this. She’s an accomplished author and commentator, and she certainly could’ve found a more intelligent way to call out Politico. As for the outlet, the piece speaks for itself.

“But there’s an uncomfortable point that, so far, everyone is skating around: We knew this would happen, decades ago. We knew this would happen, and we didn’t care. Now is the time to say it as loudly as possible: Harvey is what climate change looks like,” the article reads in part. “More specifically, Harvey is what climate change looks like in a world that has decided, over and over, that it doesn’t want to take climate change seriously.”

Really? Now is the time to have a debate over climate change? Really? Here’s the easy answer: No, it’s not. Feel free to debate climate change until you’re blue in the face, but now is not the time for that. For every scholar out there that swears climate change is very real, there’s someone else willing to call it complete hogwash.

If you feel that passionately that climate change is to blame here, then a more appropriate tactic would be to wait until the recovery efforts are well under way and people are out of danger to make your point. Period. As for Coulter, maybe next time she can make her point without bringing the sexual orientation of an elected official into the discussion.
