Air Force Veteran Defends American Flag From Protesters

After taking a flag from protesters at Georgia University, a female veteran from the Air Force was placed in handcuffs. Her actions were spurred by the protesters repeatedly stepping on the flag.

The vet, Michelle Manhart, initially had no intention of taking the flag but instead wanted to just pick it up off the ground. She stated that, “I did not want anything like this, but I got a call from a student who told me that the flag was on the ground, and they were walking on it.” Her first intentions were simply to pick it up since she holds the belief that it should not be on the ground.

A bystander's video captured the scene and showed Manhart holding on to the flag as police officers and students attempted to recover it from her.

While students told Manhart she was stealing school property, she stated that “This flag actually belongs to the entire United States.”

The protest was reported as being against racism, which is a cause that Manhart stated she is in support of. However, she did not support the method they were using. Although she was not arrested, Manhart was detained by authorities for several hours. She stated that “I’m not fighting against them. I’m fighting against the way they are going about it.”

Officials from Valdosta State University have issued a statement to respond to the incident, but they did not address the flag being stepped on by students.
