AG Jeff Sessions Floated Possibility Of Resignation Over Growing Tensions With Trump

You can apply many different labels to President Donald Trump and his administration, but boring is not one of them. It seems as if there’s a major news story revolving around some sort of palace intrigue every other day or so, and the latest one is a real doozy. Reports indicate that Attorney General Jeff Sessions hinted at resignation over tensions with Trump. While there has been no confirmation from the White House about the report, they haven’t exactly denied it either.

As the Daily Mail shares, Trump was pretty ticked off that Sessions decided to recuse himself from the Russia investigation, and he wasn’t shy about letting people know that. The president reportedly lashed out at Sessions a number of times in private meetings, and the veteran political figure grew tired of it. Sessions made the call to recuse himself on his own, and the president wasn’t feeling warm and fuzzy about the decision.

As tensions rose in the West Wing, Sessions reportedly offered to quit. Obviously his offer wasn’t accepted, but the president is still said to be angered by his decision. To add even more intrigue to the Trump-Sessions flap, reports are swirling that former FBI Director James Comey had previously asked Sessions not to leave him alone with Trump.

While there’s no confirmation on that report either, many observers are taking that as another sign that there’s a fire behind all of that smoke. The White House has simply been unable to get ahead of the story on the Russia investigation, and some observers feel they have no choice but to believe there’s something there as a result.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer was asked about the Sessions situation during yesterday’s briefing, but he offered up a vague reply.

“If I haven't had a discussion with him about a subject, I tend not to speak about it,” Spicer said.

Trump doesn’t seem to be too happy with the Justice Department in general, as that was one of the many topics he has addressed on social media of late.

“The Justice Dept. should have stayed with the original Travel Ban, not the watered down, politically correct version they submitted to S.C.,” read one post.

“The Justice Dept. should ask for an expedited hearing of the watered down Travel Ban before the Supreme Court - & seek much tougher version,” read another.

Trump continues to do himself no favors by venting on social media, but he seems to be convinced that it’s the best way for him to communicate with voters. While hardcore Trump supporters may love the tactic he’s taking, others are growing weary and are beginning to openly wish for him to start acting more presidential.
Beyond that aspect, he’s distracting from his administration’s overall agenda with each one of his posts. His latest brain dump quickly makes its way to the top of the news cycle, and that leaves administration staff scrambling to answer questions about something they had no idea he would be talking about.

We’ll have to wait and see how the Sessions thing plays out, but it’s probably safe to say this won’t be the last resignation offered up if Trump continues to lash out.
