After Comey Firing, Trump Claims Kremlin 'Laughing' At Allegations Of Russian Connections

The Trump administration’s Russian scandal is a cause for amusement in Moscow, according to the president.

On Thursday, as evidence of the Trump campaign’s links to Russia continued to mount, the embattled commander-in-chief tweeted: “Russia must be laughing up their sleeves watching as the U.S. tears itself apart over a Democrat EXCUSE for losing the election.”

Politico pointed out that U.S. intelligence agencies accused Russian leader Vladimir Putin of ordering the hacking of Democratic Party officials’ emails during the 2016 presidential campaign. The FBI, as well as the Republican-led House and Senate intelligence committees, are investigating Russia’s attempts to interfere in the election and whether the Trump campaign conspired in those efforts.

Trump continues to deny the allegations, calling the controversy a “hoax” and “fake news.” On Friday morning, he tweeted: “Again, the story that there was collusion between the Russians & Trump campaign was fabricated by Dems as an excuse for losing the election. When James Clapper himself, and virtually everyone else with knowledge of the witch hunt, says there is no collusion, when does it end?” (Clapper is a former director national intelligence who has provided congressional testimony about the Russian affair.)

Democrats are lashing out at Trump’s decision to fire FBI Director James Comey on Tuesday. Some say the president was trying to stop the bureau’s investigation of the Russian scandal. The administration initially told reporters that Comey lost his job because Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein recommended the dismissal. However, on Thursday, Trump told NBC’s Lester Holt that he had already decided to sack the director before receiving the Justice Department officials’ letter. The president admitted he wanted to see the FBI’s Russian probe end.

Adding fuel to the fire, Trump held an Oval Office meeting this week with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and the country’s ambassador to the United States, Sergey Kislyak. Putin requested the meeting, according to Politico. Only Russian media were allowed in the room. Following the event, Trump tweeted pictures of himself posing with the Russians, and wrote: “LETS MAKE PEACE!”
