Report: Priscilla Presley Is The Latest Celeb To Ditch Scientology

The hits keep on coming for the Church of Scientology. The religious sect has always been a source of curiosity due to the scores of famous folks that it counts as members, but many have been scurrying away in very public fashion in recent times.

Rumors are swirling that another one has abandoned ship - and this one has been a member for 40 years. As the Daily Mail shares, sources indicate that Priscilla Presley has decided to walk away from Scientology.

Presley reportedly hooked up with the church soon after the death of Elvis Presley in 1977. We can only imagine that she was seeking some sort of solace during troubled times, as the unexpected loss of a loved one is incredibly trying.

Since she has reportedly been a member of the church for four decades, we can assume she found what she was looking for along the way. However, it sounds like it’s just not doing the trick for her any longer.

“I’ve had enough. I’m done,” she reportedly told a source.

There has been no direct confirmation from Presley herself as of yet, but the source points out that her daughter, Lisa Marie, reached a similar conclusion about the church back in 2014.

“Priscilla reached out to John Travolta after Elvis died in 1977 and that’s how she ended up in the church. She has been in it ever since and she raised her daughter Lisa Marie in it,” the source said. “Lisa Marie leaving made it hard for Priscilla. They are very close as a family and leaving the church has been a family decision.”

The church has seen a number of high-profile exits in recent years, including Katie Holmes, Nicole Kidman, and Demi Moore. Holmes and Kidman are both ex-wives of Tom Cruise, who is apparently still entrenched as one of the church’s most famous members.

“Everyone who’s left has left quietly. Everyone is so scared; all the well-known people,” said filmmaker Paul Haggis.

So why are folks scared? There have been a number of well-publicized scathing reviews of the practices of the church through the years, and the perception of Scientology has evolved from it being seen as a curiosity to it being viewed as a cult-like sect.

Scientology was founded by science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard back in 1955, and there have always been rumors that things aren’t exactly on the up and up. At the time of her exit, Lisa Marie provided some clarity for what led to her decision.

“I was slowly starting to self-destruct. They were taking my soul, my money, my everything,” she said.

A number of reports through the years have called the church to task for its controversial practices, including allegations that very personal information that new members are forced to reveal is later used to blackmail them.

There have also been claims by former members that the church essentially held them captive and out of contact with their families. If Presley has in fact moved on, we’re going to go out on a limb and assume that she won’t be the last famous face to take that step.
