Is O.J. Simpson Violating His Parole By Drinking Alcohol?

O.J. Simpson, newly released from prison, was spotted ordering a Bloody Mary at a taco restaurant in Las Vegas on Saturday, according to TMZ.

One of the conditions of Simpson’s parole is that he may not drink alcohol to excess, CNN reported. If the former football hero is caught with a blood-alcohol content greater than .08 percent, he could find himself back behind bars.

He is required to periodically submit to blood tests. A “risk assessment” conducted by a parole board noted that Simpson has a history of “frequent abuse” and “serious disruption of functioning” due to the use of alcohol.

He testified during his trial that he had been drinking the day he was arrested. As a parolee, Simpson also is not allowed to have any guns or drugs, and is banned from associating with fellow ex-convicts.

Simpson spent the past nine years at the Lovelock Correctional Center in Nevada after a jury convicted him of kidnapping and armed robbery. He was among several men who stole sports memorabilia from a hotel and casino in 2007.

Simpson claimed the merchandise was his property.

AOL reported that the former NFL star’s first meal after becoming a free man was at McDonald’s. He now lives in a Las Vegas house, on a golf course in a gated community, that is valued at $1.8 million.

Despite having aged and experienced the rigors of prison life, Simpson still draws a crowd wherever he goes. People line up to get his autograph. He apparently does not intend to make any effort to stay out of the public eye.

“He’s not going to hide,” a Simpson friend, Tom Scotto, told CNN. “He’s going to focus on kids, friends, his family and golf. … He is going to go out.”

A spokeswoman for the Nevada Department of Corrections, Brooke Keast, recalled the day last month when Simpson left prison. “I told him, ‘Don’t come back,’ and he responded, ‘I don’t intend to,’” she said.

“He was upbeat, personable and seemed happy to get on with his life.” Simpson walked out of the facility in the wee hours of the morning in an attempt to escape news cameras.

“Our biggest concern was our safety and the public’s safety, and not wanting anybody, paparazzi, to follow him,” Keast explained. “He left through a big blue door through the front gatehouse and exited quietly. He looked down because he didn’t want to be photographed.”

Simpson rose to fame as a standout college football player who became a running back for the Buffalo Bills. His popularity led to a film career in which he appeared in several comedies. He also made a number of television commercials before becoming the defendant in one of the most highly publicized murder cases ever.

He was charged with killing his former wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ron Goldman, in 1994. Despite DNA results and other evidence, a jury found Simpson not guilty the following year. He lost a civil suit filed by his ex-wife’s parents, which cost him $33.5 million.
