Women In Walmart Parking Lot Hear Noise - They Realize It's Coming From A Trunk

Tori Castillo, 39, was in a bit of a pickle. The woman had an immense desire to go browsing around the local Walmart near her home in Utah, but she couldn’t figure out how to successfully manage that task while also tending to her children, ages five and two. Castillo would go on to have herself a lightbulb moment, and her bright idea has led to her being locked up.

As the Independent Journal Review shares, the woman unfathomably locked her two children in the trunk of her vehicle so that she could go do some shopping. Yes, seriously. Local resident Charity Maw was startled when she heard pounding on a trunk in the store parking lot, and she quickly became outraged when she investigated it further.

“I was shocked, I was shaken, and I was mad. The little girl’s voice. Just screaming, let me out! I’m scared,” she said. “I can just imagine the car trunk because it was a dark car and the heat going on it... if nobody would've found them they could have died.”

The scene quickly gathered a crowd, including a woman named Heidi who was equally repulsed at what was going on.

“I could hear some kids crying. I turned to my friend and I'm like, 'There's people in this trunk. There's kids in this trunk!'” Heidi recalls. “She was [yelling], 'Mom, let me out! Let me out! Mom! Help!' She was screaming, crying. Both kids just came out... they just jumped out at us. One lady took the 2-year-old, I took the 5-year-old.”

Heidi says that she was able to talk the kids through opening the trunks emergency latch. Good samaritans remained with the children until Castillo exited the store, and the authorities were en route soon thereafter. Castillo would offer up a laughable excuse that her babysitter hadn’t shown up, but cops showed little sympathy for the woman’s perceived plight.

“It’s never right to lock a child inside of a vehicle, let alone a trunk of a vehicle," noted Riverdale Police Lt. Casey Warren.

Police were able to quickly confirm the bystander's account of what had gone down, and Castillo was promptly arrested and charged with four counts of child abuse with physical injury and one charge of theft. No word on why the latter charge was tacked on, but we’ll assume Castillo also has sticky fingers in addition to her obvious inability to function as a responsible parent.

“The small children ... began making noise and moving frantically, causing the vehicle to shake. Several good Samaritans observed this and came to the aid of the children,” the police department confirmed.

Castillo was booked into the Weber County Correctional Facility, and the children were released to their father. We can only hope that he has more common sense and regard for human life than the mother of his children does.

“It was kind of heartbreaking to see that somebody could do something so cruel,” Heidi continued.
