Woman Who Did Unthinkable To Toddler Won't Get Jail Time

After a violent crime spree, a Minneapolis woman has been spared by a compassionate judge who does not believe she is a threat to society, despite her crimes. She attempted to hang a toddler in her care, and then nearly killed people when trying to escape in her car in November of 2016. The judge thinks the woman simply snapped during a 'perfect storm' of events, and has given her probation instead of a jail sentence.

Nataliia Karia pleaded guilty to attempted murder, third-degree assault and criminal vehicular operation after hitting several people as she fled the scene of a crime. She faced 13 years in prison and expected the worst, but the judge took mercy on the immigrant woman because of the abuse she was suffering at the hands of her own husband.

Karia was a daycare provider when she snapped one day. Joseph Sabir, a client, pulled up to her home to drop off his daughter when he ran into Karia. She told him she had 'done something bad', and rushed out.

Sabir heard a child crying and ran to find him. He discovered a 16-month-old hanging from a noose that had been fashioned out of a pair of tights. Sabir managed to rescue the boy, grabbed the children and ran out of the house.

Meanwhile, Karia was fleeing the scene herself. She drove away in her minivan and rear-ended another vehicle, shoving it into another car. The driver, 37-year-old Salvador Lema, got out of his car and Karia attempted to flee the scene again. This time she dragged Mr. Lema 10 blocks.

As she was driving she struck a man on a bicyclist, 29-year-old Jacob Carrigan, leaving him with broken bones. She then struck another car being driven by a pregnant woman.

Karia brought her minivan to a stop at an overpass and threatened to jump off. Witnesses managed to hold her down until police arrived. She was immediately taken into custody.

All the victims survived, though Carrigan needed to have a rod surgically implanted in his leg. Thankfully, this prevented him from having to have his leg amputated.

The 43-year-old Ukranian woman came to the U.S. in 2006 and said her husband abused her and her children ever since. Over the years, he had threatened to kill her and frequently hit her. At one point when he learned she was pregnant with a girl, he punched her in the stomach as punishment for not giving him a son. The family was in serious financial distress, so the husband forced Karia to work but refused to let her get medical help for her psychological issues.

“I don’t want to push this terrible crime onto my husband. I just want to explain what happened,” she said in court through an interpreter. "Your Honor, my children need me … Give me a chance to resume a normal life.”

The judge put her on probation for 10 years, granting her credit for the 20 months she has already served. She'll have to spend the next two months wearing an ankle monitor, and she can't be around children, including her own, without supervision.

The judge deemed Karia a 'low risk' for repeat offenses, and said her crime was due to 'the perfect storm of factors unlikely to ever be repeated'.

"There are no easy answers here," the judge noted.

Karia promised to follow her probation to the letter, telling the judge, “I thank God nobody died.”

The mother of three, ages 2, 7 and 10, is still facing proceedings from child protective services. The children have not yet been returned to her.
