Woman Charged With Murder After Leaving Baby To Die On Floor Of Car

A 21-year-old woman from South Carolina was pregnant, but did a very good job concealing her pregnancy. When she went into labor, she didn't even go to the hospital-- she gave birth in her car. She then put the infant's body in a trash bag and threw it on the floor, where she left it until police found it the next day.

Brennan Hailey Geller of Lexington is a 21-year-old high school graduate who holds down two jobs. She works at a gym part-time, and also works as a server in an Italian restaurant. Perhaps she felt she didn't have time for children, but her alleged actions are inexcusable.

Geller reportedly gave birth on Friday, shoved the baby into a trash bag and left it for dead on the floor of her car. She then proceeded to drive home and acted like nothing had happened. The young woman didn't want anyone to know that she was pregnant, not even her family.

On Saturday, Geller went to the emergency room at a hospital to seek medical attention. Doctors were concerned about her blood loss when she arrived, but she did not reveal to them that she had given birth.

“We became aware of this tragic case after Geller was treated at the hospital Saturday morning for blood loss,” said Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon in a press conference. “The medical team caring for Geller told investigators she never told them the baby was in her car.”

Police searched Geller's car and discovered the body of the baby. She was released from the hospital after being treated and was immediately arrested and taken to the Lexington County Detention Center. Geller has now been charged with murder/homicide by child abuse for failing to get medical attention for the infant, and is awaiting a bail bond hearing.

If convicted, Geller could face 20 years to life in prison.

The death of the baby is tragic, especially because Geller didn't take advantage of 'Safe Haven' laws. South Carolina is one of many states in which you can leave a baby up to a month old with an employee of any hospital, law enforcement agency, fire station or worship center with no questions asked and with no consequences. The law was designed for exactly these kinds of situations-- to give desperate new mothers in a panic a safe place to bring their babies so they don't do something drastic.

Friends on Geller's Facebook page expressed shock when hearing about the seemingly normal young woman's actions. None knew she was expecting.

“I didn’t even know she was like this or even pregnant. Jesus," said one person. "I can’t believe this. I’m like shook to the core. ...Known her since grade school and never thought in a million years she would do this. I feel so horrible for the baby and the dad. I wonder if he even knows.”

"This is absolutely disgusting! She deserves life! Poor baby. There are parents out there that WANT to be parents!!” a former friend wrote on the sheriff's department Facebook page.

There is no word yet on who the baby’s father is, or if he was even aware that Geller was pregnant with his child.
