Thief Fled And Hid From Police In A Bad Place; His Decomposing Body Was Later Found

On Monday, police in California spotted a suspected car thief and chased the man. The man fled, and police chased him into a grocery store in Lancaster, but then they lost track of him. They thought they got away. Several days later, a rotting body was found in a hollow stone pillar. Police believe it to be the same man.

The manager of a Winco grocery store in Lancaster, California began smelling a foul odor on Saturday near a stone column outside the store. He thought there was a sewage back-up, and he called a plumber to take care of the issue. The plumber came and made a grisly discovery.

The plumber removed some stones from the hollow pillar and discovered a leg with a tennis shoe. Police were called to investigate and they found a body inside the pillar. They believe the body is that of a man who had fled police on Monday.

The man was pulled over by deputies on Monday when they suspected he was driving a stolen vehicle. He ran, and cops gave chase. They spotted him heading for the Winco and climbing on the roof, but when they got up there, there was no sign of the man. He had vanished. They thought he got away.

Apparently, he tried hiding in the hollow post, which is only about 9-by-17 inches, and got stuck. 'It's been over 100 degrees up here every day. I can't imagine being inside that column and just baking. It's a strange development, and if he died that way, it's a horrible way to die,' said Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department spokesperson Lt. John Corina to KTLA in a statement.

"It's unusual. I've never seen anything like this before — some body inside a column," Corina added. "Somebody tries to hide from the police and they can't get out and end up dying in there."

Police are still investigating. At this point, the man has not been identified.

By evening, firefighters managed to pull the body out of the column. His arm was trapped behind his head and he probably could not climb back up when he got stuck.

Because of the intense heat, decomposition was rapid. A decomposition clean-up crew had to come to take care of the rotting organic matter before the area was cleared.

Locals say they were shocked by the discovery Most couldn't help feeling sympathy for the suspected thief, and the horrible way in which he met his demise.

"I was just thinking, you know, I wonder if he was trying to get anybody's attention and nobody would know," said Sunshine York-Hanger, a person who lives nearby. "Nobody would know where it's coming from, the voice, you know, if that's the case. Because I'm hoping it was instant if that was what happened."

Sadly, a lot of car thieves trying to flee police will risk their lives to get away. Instead of getting away, however, they become yet another tragic statistic.

Often times. they flee in the stolen vehicle and end up crashing after being chased by police. Sometimes they can take bystanders with them.

Last year, one young suspect survived a high-speed chase, only to attempt to flee on foot. he climbed a loading crane and spent three hours up there in a stand-off with police before plummeting to his death. It is unclear if he slipped or if he deliberately jumped.
