Teen's Parents Plead For Mercy As She Gets Sentenced For Attempt To Murder Them

On Monday, Roksana Sikorski, 17, was sentenced for 10 to 20 years in prison for the failed attempted murder to kill her siblings and adoptive parents on October 2014. The Detroit teen was only 15 when her 22-year-old boyfriend Michael Rivera planned the murders.

Before the judge read her sentence, Sikorski's mother begged the court for mercy. Laurene Sikorski said, "She's in desperate need of continued psychological help. She is still fragile, and an adult prison would shatter her delicate world. How will sentencing her as an adult help her? Is this justice?"

Roksana was four years old when the Sikorskis adopted her and her siblings from Poland. She had suffered abuse in early childhood and was diagnosed with reactive attachment disorder--a mental illness where children are unable to form an emotional attachment with their primary caregivers.

The teen apologized to her parents "for not being the daughter they wished I would be." While crying she said, "I promise that I will get better, no matter what happens."

The teen took a plea deal in February, agreeing to plead guilty to one count of assault with intent to murder in exchange for six other felony charges getting dropped. Rivera is serving a life sentence, being found guilty on all seven counts.

Rivera convinced Roksana to kill her family after he was arrested for having illegal, underage sex with her. That night, he texted her "Baby im here just cut the throat quickly on both of them...Just stab there necks baby at the artery." Roksana reportedly replied, "I can't. I'm not a psycho."

Rivera later wrote, "...stab like a slice but like ur (sic) cutting a tomato." Roksana asked, "Okay so one slice is all it takes?" Roksana woke up at 2am and snuck into her little brother's bedroom to cut his throat with a fish filet knife. He screamed and woke up Roksana's sister. Roksana then fled the house, and her brother survived.
