Filmmaker Comes Face To Face With Psychopath, What He Says Sends Chills Down Her Spine

A filmmaker struggled to work with prisons in order to gain access to several inmates considered to be psychopaths. The director wanted to do an in-depth documentary about what makes a person a psychopath, what drives them, and whether or not they can ever be 'cured'. One interviewee began analyzing the filmmaker and she felt like she was in some kind of chilling 'Silence of the Lambs' moment.

Rebecca Harrison said her encounter with one of the psychopaths in prison was a chilling experienced that left her terrorized. She sat down with many inmates to interview them for her BBC Horizon documentary, 'What Makes a Psychopath', which is slated to air tonight on the BBC at 9 p.m.

Harrison sat with 17-year-old 'Robert', who gleaned insight into her psyche just by looking at her. First, however, Robert boasted about permanently brain damaging a prison guard when he got to jail. "The back of your neck is the weakest spot on your body, so I hit him there," he said.

Harrison says Robert was charming. He loved books and he dreamed about joining the Army. He was close to his family. If you didn't know about the crimes for which he was convicted, you might be quite drawn to the intelligent youth.

Robert confided in Harrison that he could read people very easily just by looking at them. She agreed to let him analyze her, and she was shocked by his comments.

"You're on edge a little bit," he told her, adding, "...I'm not a threat."

Robert went on to analyze Harrison's clothes. "You've got dark pants on; you've got dark boots on. Your boots alone are laced all the way tight and your pants are darker of a color, so you started today with a firm, determined goal... Your shirt is ...more at ease. It's not a hard color, it's see how the day takes me, I'm going to do this but we're just going to see how it goes."

"I became terrifyingly aware of just how dangerous this man really was," Harrison told the Daily Mirror.

Harrison asked Robert if he considered himself a psychopath.

"Narcissistic maybe. Not a psychopath,” he answered.

Harrison interviewed other suspected psychopaths chosen for her by the Indiana State Prison psychologist. Her interviews also include face-to-face talks with Mark Moye, who is serving 30 years for child molestation, and Joshua Wright, who is serving more than 100 years for crimes like rape, murder and moving a body from the scene of a death.

Psychopathy is a personality disorder with strong antisocial behavior. That doesn't mean psychopaths are not social creatures - quite the opposite. They're usually capable of being quite charming and likable, but this is only because they read people very well and can act as they think people want them to act. What they lack is empathy and remorse, which is why they can be (but are not always) dangerous individuals.
