Doctors Horrified To Find 12-Year-Old's Pregnant - Then They See Who The Father Is

A man was arrested after bringing a young, pregnant girl to a hospital. The man and his mother claimed that the girl was his 20-year-old wife, but the hospital staff didn't believe him and alerted authorities. The man has been arrested.

The man and his mother went to the Xuzhou City Central Hospital in the Jiangsu Province and he introduced the girl as his wife. The girl did not speak Mandarin, nor did she have any identification, but the man said she was 20 years old and pregnant with his child. He said she needed routine pregnancy care.

The staff took one look at the little girl and doubted the man's story, saying she looked like she was 12 years old.

"It's obvious she is just a child, and certainly not anywhere near 20 years old," said one of the members of the hospital staff.

When staff questioned the man, he became irate. "I took her here to be examined - just do your job. Stop asking so many questions."

The staff called police, who arrested the man and are investigating. They believe the girl was abducted and brought in as a foreign child bride. It's not uncommon for Chinese men to 'purchase' abducted girls from Vietnam who have been smuggled across the border.

Child brides are not just a problem in China, or in third-world countries. In the United States, thousands of children under 18 years old have tied the knot. The majority consist of underage girls and adult men.

The minimum age for marriage in most U.S. states is 18, but in every state, there are exceptions that allow teens to get married. The most common exception is 'parental consent'. At the age of 16 or 17, teens who get the okay from their parents can legally be married.

Occasionally, parental consent is sometimes more along the lines of parental coercion, with moms and dads arranging a child's marriage. There are no laws, however, for states to investigate a parent-signed marriage license to ensure it's what the child wants.

In one case reported by the New York Times, a teen girl was brought sobbing to the county clerk, and cried as her parents signed the license and forced her into marriage. The clerk has no authority, they say, to intervene in the family matter.

With judicial approval, kids can be married before the age of 18 as well, even if they are under the age of 16. In rare cases, elementary school students have been married off. Surprisingly, there are judges who will give that approval on occasion.

According to New Jersey statistics, between 1995 and 2012, nearly 3,500 children were legally married. Some were as young as 13 years old. Many minors who are married tell stories that sound more like there should have been statutory rape charges filed rather than a marriage license. Many forced child marriages happen in religious families. Conservative Christians, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Sikhs, Orthodox Jews and Mormons often have traditions that involve girls being married off at a young age.

Sometimes families try to marry young girls who have had sex, especially if she became pregnant, to protect the 'family honor'. Sadly, this often means marrying her off to a man who molested her. In other cases, it's simply an attempt at controlling the child so that they don't grow up and threaten to leave the religion or community: saddling down a girl with a family at a young age keeps her in place. She won't get a chance to get any fancy ideas about education or career.

Some are calling for exceptions that would enable underage teens to get married to be eliminated from the books. After all, the same judge who would allow a 14-year-old to marry an adult male would probably not give an exception to allow her to go into a bar and drink, or to allow her to join the military and fight on the front lines. Why should there be an exception made in this case?
