U.S. Silver Medalist Gets Heat For Posting Selfie With Ivanka, Deletes It

With the political divide these days, it seems that you're damned if you do and you're damned if you don't. That's what one Olympic athlete must have felt when she posted a selfie with Ivanka Trump.

The picture with the president's daughter caused quite a stir among the anti-Trump crowd. When the athlete removed it, it caused a stir with the pro-Trump crowd.

Lauren Gibbs, the 33-year-old women's bobsleigh competitor who is bringing home a silver medal for the U.S., caused online controversies this week over her selfies — twice.

The Olympian got an opportunity to meet President Donald Trump's daughter, Ivanka Trump, as well as Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders. The two White House aides were attending the closing ceremonies in Pyeongchang as U.S. delegates.

Gibbs took a selfie with Ivanka and Sanders, and also let Ivanka wear her medal.

"I feel like this is almost like trying on somebody's wedding ring. Am I allowed?" Ivanka joked as she slipped the strap over her neck.

The medal winner posted the selfie online and immediately got backlash from Trump 'resisters'. Many complained that letting Ivanka wear her medal was an outrage, and that posting selfies with Ivanka and Sanders was as good as openly agreeing with Trump's policies.

"I’m sorry but they are still complicit and therefore culpable. They can appear nice in person butt get support someone who is racist and taking away rights and healthcare so don’t fall for it," said one person on Twitter to Gibbs.

"I am not falling for anything...but being nasty to them would not solve the issue...and don't get me wrong there are many issue," Gibbs retorted.

"[I] am capturing the full experience of my first Olympics, they are part of it...again whether I like what they stand for or not," Gibbs responded in another tweet.

"I feel trying the medal on is disrespectful," said another person.

"I mean I have let many people try it on! It’s a frickin Olympic medal and most people will never know what it is like to earn one, wear one or even touch one! It is meant to be shared," Gibbs responded.

On Tuesday, the posts, and the arguments, were gone. Gibbs said she deleted them.  "I was tired of reading the hate being thrown back and forth," she explained.

At that point, Trump supporters began blasting Gibbs for caving in to liberal snowflakes. Once again, Gibbs found herself defending her position.

"It was my choice to take it down... didn’t cave but didn’t want the photo caught up in a hate storm... but it’s my account and have the right to post and delete as I see fit," she said.

"This picture was the reason I followed you and then to find out you deleted it. Broke my heart. But, still a fan," one person commented.

"It was allowing people to spew hate at each other which broke my heart. I still believe in what I said. I just wasn’t going to be a platform for people to be evil to each other," she answered.

You can’t please everyone, especially in this day and age when it comes to anything remotely related to politics.
