Staten Island Man Destroys His Robert De Niro Portrait After Actor Disrespects President

A man from Staten Island, New York always idolized Academy Award-winning film maker Robert De Niro. The man even had a portrait of the actor in his home. The portrait was from when De Niro made 'Goodfellas', and it meant a lot to the fan. After De Niro's rant at the Tony awards on Sunday, however, the fan found a new place for the framed image: the trash.

Joseph DeVito heard about De Niro's anti-Trump rant on Sunday night, and he was extremely disappointed in the actor. De Niro walked out to introduce Bruce Springsteen, but stopped to say of President Donald Trump, "F--k Trump. It's no longer 'Down with Trump,' it's 'F--k Trump.'"

The Trump supporter had enough. As someone filmed him, DeVito went down to his portrait.

DeVito tells the camera, "This used to be my idol, I used to love this guy... But after what he did last night at the Tonys — this is where Robert goes.”

The former fan then walked through the house with the portrait and threw it into a trash can outside. He pulled a hammer out of his tool box smashed it to pieces.

“You’re a real piece of s--t,” DeVito said as he tore the photo into confetti. “Another Trump hater down.”

DeVito made the film for his family and friends and posted it to Facebook. In the morning, he was shocked to see that it had gone viral. He tells SILive.com that he hhas no issue with people having different opinions; but he does have an issue with the disrespect.

"Some of my family were Obama supporters and we bang heads but we're not going to fight over it; everybody has their own opinion. Why would I start a fight with you because I think my opinion is right and your opinion is wrong? That makes no sense," he said.

DeVito, a former Marine, believes that criticizing the president is one thing; but using obscene language about him on television is quite another thing.

Many people, regardless of who they support, are getting sick of celebrities hijacking public events and award shows to spout their political outrage. No one denies that a celebrity is entitled to have an opinion, but when people want to tune into an awards show, buy a music festival ticket or even go to a sporting event, they’re looking to get away from politics.

De Niro’s performance on Sunday night overstepped boundaries and kicked the anti-Trump rhetoric up a few notches. Will De Niro be smacked down for going overboard, or has he just raised the bar? So far it seems that even disappointed many liberals who dislike Trump aren’t happy about it.

"The greatest actor of his generation could have said something important," tweeted Steve Schmidt, an MSNBC political analyst. "He could have defended liberal democracy or freedom of speech and expression. He could have stood for Decency. Instead he strengthened Trump’s hand by mirroring his debasement of our culture. Be better."

“If people [who] applauded De Niro’s statement last night don’t understand that they are helping Donald Trump’s reelection every time they do something like that, and they don’t understand,” said 'Morning Joe' host Joe Scarborough.
