From President to Producer? Barack Obama's Next Move May Be Surprising

According to the New York Times, former President Barack Obama's next movie might be making an original show for Netflix. The former POTUS is reportedly engaged in talks with the video streaming service, and might be behind new original content that would challenge President Donald Trump, but in an indirect way.

Both Mr. Obama and former First Lady Michele would be involved in a 'production partnership' with Netflix, according to Brian Stelter of CNN. It's unclear at this point if the Obamas would appear in the production, or if they would just be the driving force behind it, but the pair seem to be looking to use the power of the media to further their political agenda.

Some speculate Obama may appear on the show to moderate discussions about timely topics. Another format suggestion is that the show would be filmed documentary-style, endorsing various positions in line with Mr. and Mrs. Obama's political leanings.

Thus far, Obama has not directly challenged his successor, but he has not remained silent. He has been very outspoken with his own political views, responding to some of the policies and comments of President Trump in a round-about way, without mentioning his name.

Mrs. Obama has likewise criticized Trump's behavior by bringing attention to it and commenting on it, without specifically calling out the current Commander-in-Chief by name.

For example, Michelle once gave a timely lecture about the importance of using restraint before posting on social media, which seemed to be tailor-made comments toward Trump, even if she never mentioned him.

Likewise, after some of Trump's executive orders, Obama has taken to social media to express support for the opposite position.

According to the report from the Times, the new Netflix show would follow in this vein.

"Mr. Obama does not intend to use his Netflix shows to directly respond to President Trump or conservative critics, according to people familiar with discussions about the programming. They said the Obamas had talked about producing shows that highlight inspirational stories," the article reads.

"But the Netflix deal, while not a direct answer to Fox News or Breitbart.com, would give Mr. Obama an unfiltered method of communication with the public similar to the audiences he already reaches through social media, with 101 million Twitter followers and 55 million people who have liked his Facebook page."

According to Eric Schultz, Obama's senior advisor, the couple have 'always believed in the power of storytelling to inspire'.

“Throughout their lives, they have lifted up stories of people whose efforts to make a difference are quietly changing the world for the better. As they consider their future personal plans, they continue to explore new ways to help others tell and share their stories," said Schultz.

Mr. and Mrs. Obama are one of the youngest couples to come out of the White House, and the politically powerful pair are not expected to fade into retirement. Since leaving, they’ve penned their memoirs and have moved on with pursuing their agenda and being an influential voice in their party.

With more than 53 million followers on Barack Obama’s Facebook page, a Netflix show could provide him with an extremely powerful platform.
