Patrick Duffy, Then and Now: Star Looks So Different Than His 'Dallas' Days

Actor Patrick Duffy skyrocketed to fame after he landed the role of Bobby Ewing on the prime-time soap opera, 'Dallas', in 1978. He was initially supposed to be killed off after the first season, but he was such a hit with fans that he wasn't killed off until season nine-- only to have it later revealed that his death was someone else's dream, leaving Duffy open to return to the show for season 10.

He went on to reprise his role as Ewing in two made-for-television films, 'Dallas: J.R. Returns' and 'Dallas: War of the Ewings'. He even came back to resume the role when Dallas was rebooted in 2012.

Duffy, his head of thick, luxurious black locks of wavy hair, was the show's heartthrob. At 29, he played a wealthy oil baron in a Romeo-and-Juliet style marriage. He was married to Pamela Barnes, portrayed by actress Victoria Principal, who came from a rival wealthy family.

As time went on, the cast became more of an ensemble, with the big break-out star being everyone’s favorite villain, J.R. Ewing (portrayed by Larry Hagman).

J.R. was Bobby’s big brother. Bobby was his father’s favorite, which always stuck in his brother’s craw, and the two were always at odds with each other. J.R. was ruthless and always scheming to get what he wanted and come out on top. He would stop at nothing to build his fortune.

Bobby, on the other hand, was good-hearted. His moral compass kept him from becoming as cruel and selfish as his older brother.

Today, at 69, Duffy is rocking an altogether different look, but he's still looking great. His hair is now a silvery-gray, which he wears longer and pulls back into a sleek ponytail. He's also got a mustache and some casual stubble on the chin, looking sexy as ever.

While Duffy is best known for his role on 'Dallas', he's actually had an incredibly busy career. He's made about two dozen made-for-television movies. He has guest starred on a number of television series, including the popular 'Dallas' spin-off, 'Knot's Landing'. He’s lent his voice to a number of projects, including audiobooks and video games.

From 1991 through 1998, he starred in another hit television show, 'Step By Step'. He and co-star Suzanne Somers starred as two single parents who met on vacation and had a whirlwind romance. They impulsively ended the vacation with getting married.

Both returned home to tell their children the news, and the show follows the large, blended family as they adapt to life under one roof.

In 2016, Duffy published the novel 'Man from Atlantis', based on a short-lived television show he starred in before his breakout role on Dallas. "When TV unveiled the series Man from Atlantis, no one knew the how, where and why of Mark Harris.

Over time the show’s star, Patrick Duffy, formulated his own version of the history of Mark and his people. Here at last is the book that gives every reader and fan of the show the life and mythology of Atlantis, who they were and where they came from.

Patrick Duffy’s close connection to his fictional character makes this a behind the scenes fantasy story," read a report about the novel on the blog 'Space1970'.

Duffy will be returning to his old ‘Dallas’ home soon, though. In an upcoming meet-and-greet, he'll appear at the mansion with Linda Grey, who played his sister-in-law, Sue Ellen, on the show.
