Iconic Actress and Singer Doris Day Opens Up About Her Health

Doris Day is one of the most recognizable names in Hollywood history. Her long and illustrious career in film includes such classics as 'Calamity Jane' (1953), 'The Man Who Knew Too Much' (1956) and 'Pillow Talk' (1959).

The latter of which she received an Oscar nomination. She's also the singer of songs like 'Que Sera Sera,' 'A Bushel and a Peck' and 'Secret Love'. She had her own television sitcom, 'The Doris Day Show', in the 1970's, and she has worked tirelessly for decades as an animal activist.

Where does Day, who recently celebrated her 96th birthday, find the energy to do all this? According to the legend, she is blessed.

"I've been blessed with good health, wonderful pals, lovely fans, and so many precious four-leggers. What more can I ask for?" she tells Closer Weekly in a rare interview.

According to her Biographer, Pierre Patrick, the star has not been forgotten. "The amount of fan mail she still gets is crazy," he said. "When I was at her house for her birthday, there were bags, and bags of mail in the garage, and she's great at answering it all."

Day is still very active in her career. She won't let her age slow her down. These days, though, she's been doing a lot more off screen than on screen. "I loved my singing and acting career, but my greatest accomplishment is the important work I do for my two charities," she said.

The two charities to which she's referring are the Doris Day Animal Foundation and the Doris Day Animal League.

The Foundation's mission is to issue grants to worthy animal welfare organizations. The League is a Washington D.C.-based advocacy group that attempts to bring awareness to the pet overpopulation problem, promoting spaying and neutering.

Day doesn't just lend her name to these organizations; she herself is constantly taking in new animals and caring for them. Whether it's picking up a stray cat or fostering a rescued horse, the animal lover had devoted her life to helping those who can't help themselves.

For the most part these days, even when she's working, she stays out of the limelight. Day does a lot of behind-the-scenes work, such as lending her voice to various projects, or licensing her songs to different companies and films. Much of her music is so rooted in the cultural consciousness that it's still wildly popular.

"Her song 'Dream a Little Dream' was just featured in 'I, Tonya', and 'It's Magic' was featured in 'The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story'. It's a very important part of the show, played right before the first crime is committed," said Pierre.

"It's amazing to me how often I still get offers to appear in various projects and to record," said Day.

Day is a prime example of someone following their bliss in life. She's had her share of heartaches. Her husband squandered her fortune and passed away of cancer in 1968. Her beloved son also passed away from cancer in 2004, a difficult blow for the loving mother.

But rather than being consumed by grief, Day seems to be able to find a way to put it all in perspective.

"I think you have to get through the bad times to appreciate the good things in life. I've had my share of both and I always say, I'm like one of those dolls with the round bottom: If life deals you a blow, you just have to bounce right back!” she said.
