High-Ranking Military Official Warned Raves About Colin Kaepernick, Says Reports

When Colin Kaepernick's contract with the San Francisco 49ers was up and he became a free agent, some people were stunned to find out the young quarterback, who is in his prime, was not signed by another team. Of course, some were not so stunned — the drama surrounding Kaepernick over his protests of the national anthem is not exactly incentive to hire the player.

A new report says that the former NFL star came very close to being signed by the ravens, until a military official advised against it.

A lot of athletes have taken up and joined Kaepernick's protest, and are taking a knee during the National Anthem. Kaepernick remains the face of the movement, however, and remains at the center of the controversy.

This made him an unattractive candidate for signing by other NFL teams back in 2017.

According to TMZ Sports, Coach John Harbaugh was considering signing the quarterback to the Baltimore Ravens when Joe Flacco sat out for the summer due to a back injury. Harbaugh was hesitant, however, and sought advice from a friend.

That friend, according to the report, was a 'high-ranking member of the U.S. military'. The official considered it and reminded Harbaugh that taking a knee during the anthem was not 'in line with the team’s core values'.

The military official didn't come out and say that Harbaugh shouldn't sign Kaepernick, but he did advise that the team be clear about the behavior they expected. Specifically, the contract should include 'specific guidelines' that would stop Kaepernick from his anthem protests.

Harbaugh, in the long run, didn't think it was worth the trouble. In the long run, the team signed Thad Lewis instead.

According to ESPN, Harbaugh was open to signing Kaepernick, and so was Ozzie Newsome, the Ravens' general manager. It was owner Steve Bisciotti who blocked the attempt to sign the quarterback, though the reason wasn't made clear.

Kaepernick’s taking a knee during the anthem to protest what he believes are systemic injustices and police brutality towards people of color sparked a national debate. Many people, even those who don’t agree with the protest, have argued that the NFL player has a right to a peaceful protest.

Others have claimed that he has a right to protest, but on his own time. He shouldn’t be allowed to protest on the job, creating drama and offending the audience.

Sports is one way in which many people look forward to taking a break from politics and banning with other fans for some fun; it’s one of the things that can potentially bring a very divided country together, if only for a couple of hours. The protests are seen as insensitive to those who fight to defend the freedoms that the flag represents.

If Kaepernick stirred the pot, President Donald Trump brought it to a boil at the beginning of the 2017 season when he suggested that any player following in Kaepernick’s footsteps, or knee prints as the case may be, should be fired.

It sparked a fury with supporters, and more players kneeled than ever. This in turn sparked a backlash from those opposed to the protests. They boycotted football, and the NFL had its worst viewing year ever.
