Doris Day Finally Celebrates the Correct Birthday

When it comes to age, Hollywood legend Doris Day always adopted the 'Que sera sera' attitude. The actress always said age is 'just a number', but there is another reason why she didn't pay it much mind: she wasn't sure what that number was.

Somewhere along the line, she forgot when she was born. Now, thanks to the Associated Press, she finally knows.

It seems the celebrated actress was born in 1922. The AP dug up her birth certificate on Monday and found that the Academy Award-nominated star turned 96 years old on April 3.

For the longest time, Day thought she was born in 1924, but wasn't sure. No one is entirely sure how the mix-up came about, but considering the star started in the 1930's, it's understandable.

“The story I have heard the most is that at one point Doris was up for a role when quite young and her age may have been miswritten on the audition form. We don’t know if that’s correct, but if so it could’ve simply stuck for all these years," said her spokesperson, Charley Cullen Walters.

Day started out as a singer and dancer in her teens, but after a terrible car wreck she had to hang up her dancing shoes. She instead turned to acting, and went on to become a huge success. She was the quintessential 'girl next door', and appeared in a number of classic films, such as 'Calamity Jane' and 'Pajama Game'.

She went on to have her own sitcom, 'The Doris Day Show', in 1968, and she put out a number of albums.

This puts Day right around the same age as long-time friend and fellow actress, Betty White. Day and White, both of whom are major animal rights activists, always wondered which of them was older. Turns out it's Betty White, but only by a couple of months. White celebrated her 96th birthday on January 17.

"I've always said that age is just a number and I have never paid much attention to birthdays, but it's great to finally know how old I really am!" said Day in a statement.

Day reportedly spent her birthday with some of her closest friends at a low-key celebration in her Carmel, California home. Her fans are celebrating by uploading photos of their pets to social media.

The campaign was started by her rescue, the Doris Day Animal Foundation. Using the #DorisBirthdayWish, her fans are encouraged to share their pet photos so they can be shown to the animal lover. Not only is Day delighted to see some of the happy fur babies, but the campaign is being used to raise awareness of animal rights and raise funds for the foundation.

“The #DorisBirthdayWish video and photo campaign has been a huge hit and Doris is thrilled that many people have made DDAF.org to go along with their entries,” Walters tells PEOPLE. “She has been loving viewing them throughout the weekend and will continue to do so through the birthday tomorrow so we hope as many people will submit and donate as possible!”

According to Day, who is usually interview-shy, she has had a good life. “There’s no sense in having regrets," she told Closer Weekly earlier this year. "I think you have to get through the bad times to appreciate the good things in life. I’ve had my share of both and always said I’m like one of those dolls with the round bottom — if life deals you a blow, you have to bounce right back.”
