Distraught Canadian Women’s Hockey Player Refuses To Wear Silver Medal After Stunning Loss

When you work your tail off to reach a goal and ultimately come up short, it can be awfully tough to keep your emotions in check. That said, handling yourself with grace and aplomb will even further bolster your internal resolve as opposed to wallowing in self-pity.

Jocelyne Larocque, a 29-year-old women’s hockey player from Canada, may very well be wishing she had chosen to take the former path right about now. As the Daily Mail shares, Larocque is being obliterated on social media for seemingly refusing to wear a Silver Medal in the wake of her team’s upset loss to the United States squad in the olympic final.

In the world of international women’s ice hockey, the United States and Canada have a long and storied rivalry. The powerhouse Canadian team has won the last four Olympic gold medals, and logic pointed to them making it five in a row in the highly-anticipated final match against the US this time around. It wasn’t meant to be.

The game was tied after regulation, and the US would go on to win a stirring victory in a shootout. After a joy-filled celebration for the US squad, the medal ceremony took place. Noticeably, Larocque removed her silver medal just seconds after it was placed around her neck.

“It's just hard,” she said in a post-game interview. “You work so hard. We wanted gold but didn't get it.”

While there’s no denying that it was a tough loss, users on social media were less than understanding about her choice to essentially dismiss the medal she was presented with.

“1st world problems I guess. Great game but that silver must have been so heavy for your head. Classless,” shared one user.

“Very disappointed in Jocelyne Larocque’s display of incredibly un-Canadian sportsmanship and being a poor loser. Taking off her medal immediately after being presented with it,” wrote another commenter.

“As a Canadian I am embarrassed. Grow up! You are playing with adults now! Shame!” added another commenter.

On the victors side, the mood was considerably lighter. US captain Meghan Duggan was especially jubilant, especially after coming up short against Canada at both the Sochi and Vancouver games.

“It is so sweet right now that I can't think about anything but pride and excitement. You come to the Olympics and you set out to win a gold medal. But when you take a step back and think about who you are representing. Everyone behind you back home; people that you don't even know, veterans, Americans and they love that you are representing them,” she said.

“There is so much pride in that and that is what it is about. We are standing there on the world stage, representing our country and waving our flags high. I am so proud to be an American. It was a great moment listening to the anthem.”

It was a tough loss for Larocque and Canada, and it’s tough not to feel their pain at least a little. However, Larocque’s actions after the final whistle somewhat took away from what was a compelling effort by her squad.

The game could’ve gone either way, and the puck just so happened to bounce the other way this time around. There’s plenty of athletes out there that would love to have the opportunity to compete at the games to begin with, so perhaps she can take that into consideration while gaining some perspective on being awarded a silver medal for her and her team’s efforts.
