Comedy Duo Will Joke About Anything-- Except Donald Trump

For most comedians, it is open season on President Donald Trump. It seems like not one late night talk show host can get through a show without making at least one crack at the Commander-in-Chief's expense. Comedy legends Steve Martin and Martin Short, however, say they're not going to go there in their new Netflix special.

The highly anticipated special, 'An Evening You Will Forget For The Rest of Your Life', aired on the streaming service on May 25. The comedy icons have been pals for more than 30 years now and have worked together many times, including films 'Jiminy Glick in Lalawood' (2004), 'Father of the Bride' (1991) and its sequel, 'Father of the Bride II' (1994), and both lent their voices to the 1998 animated musical 'The Prince of Egypt'.

Both Martin and Short are SNL alums, but they first met when they appeared in their first film together, 'The Three Amigos!' (1986), in which they joined fellow SNL alum Chevy Chase.

In their special, the two make music, make jokes at each other's expense, and make the audience roar with laughter. But there is one thing that they do not make during the special: political jokes.

Martin and Short say they decided to steer clear of the topic of politics to create a safe space for all of their fans, not just the liberal ones.

"Steve and I have great respect for the fact that we don’t just want a liberal audience," said Short to the Daily Beast. "So you want the audience to feel that this is, in a way, a safe zone. A zone where they’re not going to be made to feel like a jerk because they voted one way."

For Trump fans, or at least those who take a more moderate position in politics, this is a breath of fresh air. It seems it's hard to find any entertainment these days that doesn't make jokes bashing the president.

That doesn't mean Short is a fan of Trump. In fact, he's pointedly said he's not.

"As far as the Trump presidency, I wouldn’t even call it a presidency," Short said. "It’s an asterisk. It’s a typo. I mean, every day it’s worse."

All in all, however, he says that he just doesn't feel the problems plaguing our country or our leaders are funny material.

"Some people find him hilarious. I don’t find it hilarious, but you can’t say it’s dull," he said. "There’s nothing credible about Donald Trump."

Co-star Martin has also taken a few pokes at Trump in the past. In 2013, he tweeted, "BREAKING NEWS: Donald Trump takes flattering photo."

Since the 2016 election, though, Martin has largely kept his political opinions to himself.

Most comedians have been having a field day in their shows and specials, or even on their social media accounts, taking pot-shots at the president at every opportunity. Jimmy Kimmel, Stephen Colbert and the liberal ladies of 'The View' can't seem to get enough Trump jokes into their routines. Michelle Wolf, who mocked the president and the GOP at the White House Correspondence Dinner, went there like no one has ever gone there before at previous dinners.

"Like a porn star says when she's about to have sex with a Trump, 'Let's get this over with,'" she Wolf began, landing herself her own Netflix special.
