Barbara Bush's Style: Why She Rocked the White Hair and Pearls for So Long

Former First Lady Barbara Bush passed away on Tuesday at the age of 92. If there is one thing that will be remembered about her, it's how she had such a warm, 'grandmotherly' appearance.

With her white hair and always donning a string of pearls, it was easy to imagine Mrs. Bush in the kitchen baking cookies, preparing for the grandkids to visit. In the wake of her passing, an interview with her granddaughter resurfaced in which she opens up about her famous look.

As it turns out, Bush didn't just decide that white hair and pearls would be her signature because she liked them. Not surprisingly, there was a very practical reason behind the choices.

Jenna Bush Hagar, daughter of former President George W. Bush, interviewed her grandmother on the 'Today Show' two years ago for her 90th birthday. Barbara shares the reasons behind her style.

The pearls were a no-brainer, it seems. Barbara began wearing strings of pearls as wrinkle camouflage.

“The pearls are to cover the wrinkles,” Barbara said, noting that they don't really work in the long term. She says that as far as wrinkle coverage goes, the pearls 'no longer do'.

"You can’t wear pearls all over your face," she claims.

She was never without them, whether it she was dressed casually for watching a baseball game, complete with cap, or whether it was a formal state dinner. Sometimes she wore one strand, sometimes, two, and sometimes a triple strand. Business or pleasure, casual or formal, pearls were a staple of her wardrobe.

The white hair is something that Barbara chose because she thought it was the bests option for her active lifestyle. She liked the outdoors and swimming, but these activities can take a toll on the color of your hair-- especially if you color it.

“The white hair was because I wanted to play golf,” Barbara explained. “I wanted to play tennis. I wanted to swim and my hair turned, as I’m sure someone else will tell you, orange, green, yellow, depending upon how much chlorine in the pool. So I decided to go white.”

It's not surprising she was given the moniker 'Everybody’s Grandma'. She had plenty of experience. Mrs. Bush was married to former President George H.W. Bush for 73 years, and is the mother of six children-- including George W. Bush and Florida Governor Jeb Bush.

The couple have 14 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Bush will be remembered for more than just her locks, her go-to accessory, or even the men in her family. Back in the 1950’s, Ms. Bush jumped into the battle for civil rights when innkeepers at a hotel refused to let her black babysitter stay with the family.

She dedicated herself to fighting childhood leukemia after losing her 3-year-old daughter to the cancer in 1953. She was an advocate for literacy and worked in efforts to help the homeless.

She pushed her husband to endorse federal funding back during the Reagan administration when the disease was still highly controversial and misunderstood.

Bush always strove to be nonpartisan and worked with people on both sides of the political aisle, treating everyone with respect and kindness. She was a credit to her family, her political party and her country.
