Staples Fires Back at President for His Policy Criticism

President Obama has accused office supply store Staples of trying to avoid responsibility. Staples refused to take the remarks lying down.

According to reports, Staples recently threatened to fire any employees who work more than 25 hours per week. The Affordable Care Act defines 'full time' as 30 or more hours per week. Staples has been accused of trying to avoid providing health care by cutting workers' hours.

On Tuesday, the president sat down for an interview with 'BuzzFeed News', and had some choice words for CEO of Staples. “I haven’t looked at Staples stock lately or what the compensation of the CEO is, but I suspect that they could well afford to treat their workers favorably and give them some basic financial security, and if they can’t, then they should be willing to allow those workers to get the Affordable Care Act without cutting wages,” said President Obama.

Before the day was out, Staples had a statement about the comments. The company claims the president "appears not to have all the facts." Apparently, the company's policies for part-time employment are at least 10 years old, and have been in effect since long before the Affordable Care Act was even proposed.

According to Staples spokesperson Mark Cautela, “It’s unfortunate that the president is attacking a company that provides more than 85,000 jobs and is a major tax payer.”

Looks like the president didn’t get the memo on that.
