Shelby Unveils New Super Snake Mustang, And It's Got More Power Than Ever

When it comes to classic automobiles, the Ford Mustang is about as classic as it gets. The first Mustang was released in 1964, meant to be affordable, sporty coupes that were performance-oriented for car lovers.

Supercar manufacturer Shelby has just unveiled the sixth generation Ford Mustang, bringing the speed machine into its most powerful incarnation ever. The modified Super Snake Mustang has been given extra width for superior handling, allowing for more power to be packed under the hood.

Shelby added four inches to the car's rear track, as well as more than two inches up front. Because of this, they were able to give the Mustang wider wheels and tires -- 12.5 inches in the back and 11 inches in the front -- to make it handle more like a race car than ever before. It’s got a lot of muscle, but it’s sharper and more stylish than ever before.

Gary Patterson, Shelby American president, calls the Super Snake the 'rock star in the lineup'. The Super Snake is the 50th anniversary car based on the Shelby-built Ford GT40-spec 427-powered GT500 made in 1967. The legendary car was the basis of inspiration for all subsequent Super Snakes, but the wider body was created for the current generation due to it broad appeal.

The widebody Super Snake was also given performance upgrades such as a supercharged V-8, 750-horsepower engine. Other upgrades include fully adjustable coilover suspensions, upgraded spindle, upgraded control arms, rear lower control arms, Brembo brakes and an external cooling upgrade. The supercharged Mustang is capable of going from zero to 60 in 3.5 seconds.

The amazing changes don't stop on the inside; on the outside, the Shelby Mustang comes fitted with a new front bumper, hood, grilles, rocker panels and more. It’s available with a choice of a dual-clutch automatic or a manual gearbox.

In the cabin, you'll find new floor mats, door sill plates and CSM badging on the engine cover and dashboard. Convertible lovers rejoice, as there is a convertible version available, which has been fitted with a light bar in the cabin.

Some additional optional upgrades includes painted stripes, a matching car cover, Shelby by Penske track suspension and, if desired, an 800 horsepower Whipple supercharged in a polished finish.

Over the years, wide-body versions of the 'Stang have becoming more and more popular, so it isn't surprising that Shelby American decided to go all out. The new Super Snake has the potential to reach up to a whopping 200 miles per hour, so it's perfect for a track or drag strip.

Of course, for this kind of power and beauty, it’s going to cost you. The new generation will set you back $113,445, and that’s just the starting price. Still, for those who can afford it, if you’re going to blow six figures on a ride, this new version of the American classic is the one you’ll want to blow it on.

The Shelby Super Snake does come with a three-year, 36,000 mile limited warranty. The 2018-2019 model is now available, but for limited release worldwide. Shelby promises each will be branded with a unique serial number that will be included in the Official Shelby Registry.
