You Don't Want To Find This In Your Toilet - Keep Watching, It's Terrifying

If you thought the claim about rats coming up through the toilet pipes was just an urban legend, I'm sorry to burst your bubble. National Geographic just proved that your worst nightmare is possible.

In a video special, National Geographic showed how easy it is for rats to come up the pipes and into your home through your toilet bowl. Rats, the narrator explains, are expert swimmers. They can hold their breath a long time and squeeze into extremely narrow passageways.

The video gives a demonstration in a toilet they cut in half. The cut half was covered with plexiglass so viewers could witness the whole horrifying sight.

Rats swimming around in sewers can easily make their way up through pipes. Plumbing pipes have lots of twists and turns, which can result in small air pockets along the way. Since rats can hold their breath for up to 3 minutes on average, these air pockets are all they need to catch their breath and continue on their way.

These tricky rodents can squeeze through extremely narrow pipes. Rats have a hinged ribcage that lets it collapse when they try to squeeze into small spaces. If their head can fit, they can fit the rest of their body. Their sharp claws help them along so they can pull themselves through any surface.

While it's rare for a rat to sneak into your home through the toilet, it's not impossible. If you do find a rat in the toilet, pour some bleach in there and close the lid. This will suffocate the critter within 15 minutes. A better way to protect yourself is to be pro-active-- you can have a rat barrier installed in your sewer line.
