Women Sat By And Watched Elderly Veteran Get Eaten Alive

A man in the UK is devastated by the horrific death of his brother, who was mauled to death by a neglected dog. The women responsible were charged just before the law changed, and the man feels like they got away with murder.

Ken Clarke grieves for his brother Clifford, 79, who died in one of the most horrible ways imaginable. Clifford was attacked right at his back door by his neighbor's dog. The dog, who had been neglected and left to starve in the yard by its owners, preyed on Clifford and hungrily ate him.

Clifford screamed, but by the time police came to investigate, the army veteran was dead and his limbs were hanging by a thread. The dog tried to attack police as well and was shot dead at the scene.

Della Woods and her partner Hayley Sulley, both 30, owned the dog. According to reports, it had been over 45 hours since they last fed it. They let the dog roam in the neighbor's gardens. Both women pleaded guilty to charges under England's Dangerous Dogs Act. They were sentenced to one year each, and they could be out in as early as six months.

That's just not good enough for Ken. It’s no sort of punishment. If the judge had given them longer it would have made an example of them," he said.

Shortly after this case, the law was changed. Under the new laws, Woods and Sulley would have gotten at least 14 years for their crime. Because they were charged before the law changed, the judge had to abide by the mandatory sentences at the time the crime was committed. The maximum was 12 months.

According to Ken, that's just 'punishment after the horse has bolted.'

"If another child gets ripped to pieces by a dog, it’s Downing Street’s fault," said Ken. "Muzzles for dangerous dogs are the only answers. My poor brother’s life should mean something – action is needed."
