Woman Found Abandoned Dog On Her Lawn With a Note From Owner

Someone left their 13-year-old dog on a woman's lawn in Fayetteville, Georgia. The owner who abandoned the dog left an apologetic note and seemed very sorry to have to give the dog up in this manner. Thankfully, the pooch had a happy ending.

The woman found the dog and was shocked. The gentle dachshund, named Reese, was left on her lawn with a note. Apparently, the owner, a single mother with four children, could no longer take care of the dog.

“I hope whoever gets this [will] please take care of my dog,” the note said. “I love her so much, but I don’t have time for her," the note read.

The former owner explained in the note that Reese likes 'real food' but she throws it up, so don't give it to her.

"She love all your time and love,” the note writer promised. The note was signed, “Her mommy.”

The woman who found Reese on her property was heartbroken for the dog. She couldn't keep Reese herself, because she already had pups of her own and couldn't handle any more. She wrote a message on her private Facebook page hoping that someone she knew would be willing to take the dog in.

"So someone just dropped this dog off at my house with this note. I would take her in a heartbeat but I have 3 dogs already. Before I call the pound would someone love to have her. 13 years old. Name is Reese."

Someone who received the message tagged the Royal Animal Refuge, a local shelter. The shelter stepped in to try and lend a hand.

“When we heard about it, obviously we were upset,” said Mariel Weigand, the director, to The Dodo. "But at the same time, we thought, ‘Maybe they just didn’t know what to do or who to turn to.' One of our animal control facilities does not take surrenders, so it makes it very hard when you can’t find a rescue, and you don’t have anywhere to go.”

Robyn Klein, who fosters animals for the Royal Animal Refuge, got a call. The shelter asked if she'd be willing to take Reese in until they found her a home. Klein agreed, but when her mother first met Reese, it was love at first sight.

“[Klein’s] mom is an older lady … and she just recently lost her baby [dog] a few months ago, so she stepped up to foster,” Weigand said. “Robyn said her mom is so in love with Reese already.”

The woman offered to foster Reese herself, but she was so in love with the little dachshund, she adopted her. Now Reese has a forever home.

“She’s very happy to give her a home,” Weigand said. “She told me she’s going to be loved, and it’s a happy ending for Reese.”

Reese’s original owner has not been found, and while it’s not legal to dump a dog on someone else’s long, no matter how tear-jerking the note is that you leave, it doesn’t look like Reese was otherwise mistreated and authorities are not looking for her.

Thankfully the story had a happy ending, but it could have just as easily ended up tragic. Pet owners who need to give up their pets should call the local shelters and find out how to do it safely and humanely.
