UK Women Jailed After Their Neglected And Unfed Dog Mauls Neighbor To Death

If you can’t handle your business, then you have absolutely no business being responsible for others. That sentiment applies in a number of different situations, including matters in the workplace and on the homefront. It also applies to the responsibilities that are inherent in caring for a pet. If you can’t manage to do that well, then it’s quite clear that being a pet owner isn’t for you. We can absolutely say that’s the case for this pair of UK women, but it unfortunately took a tragedy to drive that point home.

As the Liverpool Echo shares, Della Woods and Hayley Sulley have been sentenced to one year behind bars after their dog mauled neighbor Clifford Clarke, 79, to death. The dog had been left outside and unfed for an estimated 45 hours, and that apparently led the dog to snap. A neighbor noted that the dog was “snarling” and “foaming at the mouth” prior to the attack. That same neighbor had called for help as the situation simply didn’t look right., but the help would arrive too late to save Mr. Clarke.

Judge Mark Brown noted that the man’s death was “entirely avoidable,” and he explained to the women that they were incredibly fortunate not to also be brought up on manslaughter charges as he dressed them down in court.

"I am satisfied this dreadful and forceful attack on Mr Clarke was entirely avoidable. Mr Clarke was literally eaten alive by Charlie when large amounts of tissue were ingested by the dog and that is a very shocking, appalling and tragic event," he said. “Mr Clarke suffered a horrific death and you have taken away from his family the love and companionship he would have provided."

The dog was able to break free from its dreadful conditions, and it attacked Clarke from that point. Terrified neighbors saw the scary scene unfold, but they were powerless to stop it once the dog went into kill mode. One of the responding officers noted that the scene was the “worst thing I had ever seen.”

The relatively light sentence imposed on the women has sparked a rather contentious debate among local residents and on social media, and the fact that they will now be behind bars for their irresponsible actions is of little solace to the victim’s distraught family.

“There are no winners. I will never see my brother again, these two women have gone to jail and they have never been jailed before. I have just been talking to the girls’ parents because they’re in bits, because it is not their fault,” noted 77-year-old Ken Clarke. “And we’ve got two kids without their mothers all because of a dog. The simplest thing in the world is to get a muzzle. If you can afford a tin of dog food for £1 then you can afford a muzzle. My head is wrecked. I get about two hours sleep at night. I can’t imagine a worse death.”
