Two Men Dressed In Uniform Carry A Small Military Coffin - What's Inside Will Leave You Sobbing

It's always difficult for a family to cope when a beloved pet dies. One Michigan family wanted to give their dog the kind of send-off he deserved. After all, this was no ordinary dog-- this dog was a war hero.

Rico, a K-9 with the Marines who served two tours in Afghanistan, passed away at the ripe old age of 12. His owner and military handler, Marine Staff Sgt. Russ Beckley Jr., decided Rico deserved a soldier's funeral.

“There was not a moment when it wasn’t his mission or his goal to be by my side. I was everything to him. And he was everything to me,” said Beckley to 24 Hours News 8.

Rico had been living with Beckley's parents since he retired in 2012. As his health continued to decline, the family made the difficult decision to euthanize him. They planned a special day for Rico.

The day started with dozens of guests coming to see Rico and say goodbye. Russ Beckley Sr. and Jr. both gave touching tributes to Rico before the crowds. When the time finally came, the family went inside alone with the old dog and stayed with him till his last breath.

After Rico had passed, Russ Jr. lowered the flag to half-staff. Both father and son dressed in their Marine blues and carried out Rico's coffin. The small casket was draped in a flag.

Rico was cremated and the family is planning to put his ashes in a place of honor in their home.

Beckley mourns the loss of his companion and fellow soldier, but he looks forward to seeing Rico someday. “I can just imagine one day, seeing my great grandfather, my grandfather, my father and my mother, standing there with Rico. And we will all be together again,” he said.
