Stay Away From This Animal - It May Be The Reason For A Strange Disease Making A Comeback

Leprosy sounds like something out of a medieval plague, but in fact, it has not been eradicated. There's still a risk of leprosy, particularly in connection to one common critter and well-known garden pest. Residents of Florida are being warned to keep their distance from armadillos.

Armadillos, with their gray, leathery, bumpy skin, are in fact carriers of diseases like leprosy. They can also carry rabies. Though they seem like timid animals, they will fight animals or humans if they feel threatened. Their bite or scratches could end up transmitting diseases.

Unfortunately for Floridians, climate changes have spurred on a population growth of armadillos. It's becoming more and more common to find the odd-looking critters rooting up gardens and destroying landscaped lawns. The soft dirt with plant growth contains just the kinds of insects the critters love, so your flower beds and home tomato patch are like a buffet.

There have been nine confirmed cases of leprosy in one Florida county overrun by armadillos. Health officials are warning people to stay away from them, and to keep pets away from them. Dogs can't get leprosy, but they can pass it on from an armadillo to a human.

To keep armadillos out of the yard, stack lava rocks, or put a sheet of mesh over the soil. This will discourage them. If you find any signs of armadillos, call the county health services, or at least an exterminator.
