They Adopted What They Thought Was A Tiny Dog - Then This Happened

As we all know, surprises come in all shapes and sizes. Sometimes, they even grow. Robert and Sue Markham have shared an amusing tale that helps to drive that point home. As Animal Channel shares, the couple adopted the most adorable little puppy, but things would take a rather surprising turn as things moved along.

Sue was at a local shelter when one of the little guys there absolutely stole her heart. She decided that she was going to bring him home on the spot, but she had a little conundrum to sort through. Robert is not much of a dog person, but she came up with a way to convince him that it wasn’t all that bad. She told him that their new little friend was a Jack Russell terrier, and he wouldn’t grow all that much as a result. Sue had some serious explaining to do as time moved along.

They would name the dog Yogi, and he kept on growing. And growing. And then some. It was time for Sue to fess up: Yogi was actually a Great Dane. He’s grown to a rather monstrous size, but it sounds like the couple couldn’t be happier.

“I thought a big dog would be a lot of work and could be trouble. We only have a small living room. I thought, 'How much trouble can a Jack Russell be?'” Robert explained. “By the time he was five months old, he was bigger than any Jack Russell he came across at the park and he had this big tongue that lolled out of his mouth and a tail like a baseball bat.”

“Bear sees himself as one of the family. He certainly thinks of himself as a real person. He sits on his own sofa and watches the TV with us,” Sue added. “He’s very protective of it. If a stranger comes in, he won’t let them go and sit on his sofa.”

Yogi has reached a height of 6’11,” and he tips the scales at 200 lbs. That’s a rather large difference from a Jack Russell terrier, to say the least. He also has quite the appetite, as the couple notes that he eats around $213 worth of food a month. Yogi has made himself right at home, and he even has his own designated spot on the couch where he sits and watches television with Robert and Sue.

Sue is pretty lucky she has such an easy-going hubby, as this could have turned into quite a thing. Having a large dog is not the easiest thing in the world, but it seems like Robert has adapted quite well. We’re happy to see that Yogi has found an outstanding forever home, and it’s pretty hard not to wish for the same for all of the shelter animals out there. Perhaps the couple’s amusing story will inspire even more families to take the leap and open up their homes to a new loved one - with a clear understanding of what they’re signing up for, of course.
