Service Helps Soldiers Find Homes For Their Best Friends While Deployed

Volunteering to serve your country means that sacrifices must be made. Some of those sacrifices could include leaving home any beloved bets. This happened to Alisa Johnson and her husband, Shawn, who were both due to begin military service in June 2011. They were anxious because they had no one to care for their furry best friend, JD. While they were able to find a distant relative to help, they realized that many dual-military families face the same issue.

That's when they decided to create Dogs on Deployment. It's a social network that lets military service members find responsible and loving hosts to care for their pets while serving in the military. On Tuesday, Johnson told HuffPost Live's Nancy Redd "It can be stressful if you don't have anyone to care for your pet when you have an upcoming service commitment. So to be able to assist them and give them that peace of mind is really heartwarming."

Although Dogs on Deployment is not exclusive to dogs. Since 2011, the group has helped nearly 800 pets including cats, birds, ferrets, turtles and a snake named Pedro. Retired Air Force Maj. Kevin J. Cook benefited from the service and said "Getting them back is always fun, but taking them home that night and having the first night back at home with them, that's what it's all about. Having your dogs back happy and healthy. It's just a wonderful feeling."
